Trafford Labour vote to put more money in their own pockets, with the support of the Greens. Meanwhile Lib Dems argue they're not getting enough!
Cllr Nathan Evans, Trafford Conservatives group leader says,
“We can’t support hikes in Councillors allowances at this difficult time when residents are really feeling the pinch.
Labour's plans to splash-the-cash at a time when residents have had their Council Tax increased to there highest levels ever (26% in the last 5 years). Parking charges hiked, street lights dimmed, park maintenance cut. All we are told by Labour to save money and yet in the next breath the Labour councillors set about awarding themselves a pay rise!
Looking at the state of Trafford with weeds, potholes and failed bin collections, residents must wonder what they’re paying for?
As I said in the council chamber “A rise of 40% is a matter for Labour's conscience and one that the Conservative group cannot endorse”. I’m disappointed that the Lib Dems and Greens appeared more concerned that the hike didn’t go far enough, we had hoped they would support the Conservatives view that this was not the time to put more money in elected Councillors pockets!
Cllr Evans went on to say, “The last thing residents need is more pressure on their finances and this increase has got to be paid for by somebody and sadly it will be the residents that pay for it”.
