Trafford Conservatives have been running a long-standing campaign on the closure of Altrincham Minor Injuries Unit and note that the closure of Altrincham Minor Injuries Unit (MIU) is not in line with the Labour Party’s own manifesto commitment to expand Urgent Treatment Centres.
The closure of Altrincham Minor Injuries Unit has also resulted in a lack of accessible healthcare facilities in the south of Trafford Borough and is strongly opposed by residents.
Trafford Conservative Councillors brought a motion to full Council in November of last year on this issue. Former Conservative MP Sir Graham Brady campaigned on this, as well as the 2024 Conservative Parliamentary candidate, Oliver Carroll. As many of you may remember, however, Trafford’s Labour Council voted *against* the Conservative motion on the Altrincham Minor Injuries Unit – and have since had the gall to pretend that they’ve always been against the closure of Altrincham MIU.
Labour MP, Connor Rand, has also campaigned on this issue arguing against the closure of Altrincham MIU – jumping aboard the Conservatives campaign on this issue.
It is clear that Trafford Labour are, at best, divided on the issue of Altrincham MIU and it would help if they were honest with the public about that.
Our interest on this topic peaked when we saw the question put to Manchester’s Labour Mayor, Andy Burnham, posed by a resident in Timperley, Valerie. Valerie asked about the Minor Injuries Unit in Altrincham and if it could be re-opened. Even more interesting was Mayor Burnham’s response (taken from the mayor’s account on x):
“Andy said he would look into this and thinks there should be more walk-in options across GM through his work chairing the Integrated Care Partnership.”

With Connor Rand MP against the closure of Altrincham MIU, and with Mayor Burnham promising to investigate the issue further- can Labour’s confusion over where they stand on Altrincham MIU finally be put to bed?
