Trafford Conservatives are supporting reports that Boris Johnson is being urged by Ministers to hold a World Cup final in the North of England as part of his 2030 bid.
The 2019 Conservative Party Manifesto included a proposal for a bid for the UK and Ireland to host the 2030 World Cup, and now senior ministers are calling for the Prime Minister to commit to a Northern final. Cllr. Nathan Evans, Leader of Trafford Conservative group welcomed the reports and said that ‘Old Trafford would be the perfect location for the Final and of course, Old Trafford has already hosted matches as part of the 2012 Olympics and hosted the UEFA Champions League Final in 2003. Trafford Conservatives are fully behind this proposal and will be contacting the Prime Minister’s Office to lobby for Old Trafford to be the location for the proposed event.”
Cllr. John Lamb, Shadow Executive Member at the Council for Culture and Sport said “Old Trafford hosting the 2030 World Cup Final would be a massive coup for the borough and would see huge investment in the area for a showcase event such as this. Trafford is already a home for world class sporting events such as The Ashes and will host the men's and the women's edition of the Rugby League World Cup in 2021. Therefore if football is coming home in 2030, it has to come home to Trafford.”
